What if the amazing, mile-long space inside the Detroit-Superior Bridge housed new uses and was open to the public? How would you use it?

Vote on the initial concepts developed by KSU undergraduate and graduate students and Villa Angela St. Joseph high school students and contribute your own ideas. Your comments will help determine which ideas will be built for a two day public opening of the bridge. Come to the Bridge Project on Sept. 25th and 26th to experience the built projects!

City Stage (aka Picnic Plinth)

 A plinth raised 2ft. of the ground will allow for better views out through the bridge and creates a bar counter out of the concrete beam. Sod laid on the plinth also creates a picnic area.

Pink Clouds

As the Cleveland Museum of Art's pink noodle wall disintegrates into tiny pieces, they levitate and float across Cleveland, and through the gaps in the Detroit Superior Bridge. These images capture their two day pit-stop for the Bridge Project event.

The 'noodle' bundles can be suspended from the ceiling or cantilevered from columns, depending on location and feasibility.

Additional Flooring

The floor of the bridge where the grate is we can use a thick hard plastic to cover it to make it safer to walk on. It can also prevent littering into the water below. And it would be cool to have lights strung under the plastic that contrast the lights on the fencing(to be turned on at night).

Viewing Platforms

In order to see the beautiful horizon(along south side of bridge) while sitting, we can build an elevated seating area that only has to be about 2 ft off the ground. There can be stools on either side of the platform. It should span the length between two columns which I think is about 10 ft. The seating on top of the platform can be the same benches we use on the other side of bridge.

Benches with Planters

For seating I suggest that there be benches every 100  ft or so along the north side of bridge. To add some plant life we an put potted trees on the sides of the benches (lining up with the large columns.)

Bright arrow signage to direct people's attention to the trolley level of the bridge. The arrow will be visible from the Settlers Landing RTA stop, Cuyahoga River, Nautica Pavillion and Old River Rd.

Reflecting Columns

Of note is how in the "before" image, the outer row of columns disappears into the light because of the illuminance differential - increasing the reflectance of columns will decrease the amount of illuminance differential needed for the columns to start to appear ephemeral. As shown in the "after" image, with the application of reflective mylar to the column faces, the emphasis of the space will shift from the verticals of the columns to reflected horizontal delineations, creating a more expansive feeling to the space. Finally, more daylight will be reflected into the space.

Waterfall

Design C is a waterfall, to be ran along the center of the south side of the bridge.  Placement is here because the south side is more industrial, and the pedestrian walkway is on the north side anyway, looking out over the river, the new apartments, and the lake.  This design moves water, possibly grey water from a sub pump, up the large white columns, through irrigated garden hose, or punctured pvc pipes that line the length of the center of the bridge.  The holes will create a stunning visual for passerby's, illuminated by lighting, and will enhance the experience o
