cool idea, but how do you think it will be made? they just look kinda long to stay straight/rigid enough for the mirrors to line up. maybe using some type of piping (pvc or something that comes with angle fittings)?

I like the periscope idea quite a bit however a closed circuit tv system may prove more effective at targeting views and getting the signal back to the viewer, the output could also then be better controlled by using monitors or projectors to overlap and obscure portions of the view to create panoramic or edited effects.

Thanks guys!

Yeah I think pvc would be the way to go. I like the idea of a periscope much more than making it closed circuit. To me, that kills it in a way. Anyone can watch tv, but who wants to? but looking into a tube and seeing something you didn't expect is just a lot more playful idea. Something about seeing it in real life is much more fun to me than seeing it on a screen.

What if you did both?

What if you had some "analog" periscopes, with pvc and such, and then others (pending budget?) with cameras?  You could have them all in the same matrix but have some that showed parts of cleveland beyond immediate view (university circle, the free stamp, etc. via wireless/webcam?)

I think only doing periscopes will almost "give it away" by being too simple...why look through a periscope when you  could look out the side of the bridge?  And how will periscopes function at night - is there an issue with getting enough light?

Cool idea - this would make a great tourist attraction.  Sounds expensive though.
